The winemaker

Château Laroche is a family-run wine estate located in the commune of Tauriac. With a total surface area of 35 hectares, its vineyards are divided between the Bourgeais and Blayais regions, producing white, rosé and red wines in the Côtes de Bourg and Blaye-Côtes-de-Bordeaux appellations. The grape varieties are Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Malbec. Committed to respecting the environment, the estate is certified High Environmental Value (HVE) and offers wines that reflect the terroir and know-how handed down through 3 generations.

A strong history

Owned by the Dukes, Château Laroche was one of Tauriac's vast estates until the French Revolution. Destroyed during the Hundred Years' War, it was rebuilt and burnt down again during the Revolution. Rebuilt in the 20th century, the de Onffroy family has run the estate for three generations, perpetuating the quality of its terroir and wines.

Progressive modernization over the generations

The acquisition took place in 1994, when Roland de Onffroy père sold his vineyard in the Var region to settle in Bordeaux. His son Roland joined the business and began selling bottled wines. For almost 25 years, the estate underwent a series of modernizations: more integrated viticulture and HVE certification, a commitment to respect for the environment and the vineyard; an improved winemaking process to produce wines that are ever more expressive, qualitative and representative of the vintages and their specific characteristics; maturing in French barrels to bring more complexity and body to the wines; winning awards at international, national and regional competitions; a wine profile that evolves in line with consumer expectations and tastes over the years; new, more selective and prestigious cuvées, ... In 2021, Roland's daughter Léa will join her father with new ambitions: to produce new wines in Bordeaux, to get closer to the consumer and to start marketing wines via online platforms.

The vineyard and winery

Extended over 35 hectares in Côtes de Bourg and Blaye Côtes de Bordeaux, the estate enjoys a diversity of soils and terroirs carefully managed to ensure optimal ripening of the grapes. By planting each of our grape varieties on a specific plot of land, we are able to obtain the best expression of our Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Malbec. The latter flourish in particular on our clay-limestone soils, with their fine gravelly sections, and thanks to their excellent south-western exposure, which provides plenty of sunshine and allows the grapes to ripen well.
The half-buried vat room features thermal insulation and a three-storey gravity-fed harvest reception system, for optimum winemaking quality. The winery includes modern oenological equipment and a temperature control system for controlled vinification. The château also boasts a barrel cellar for in-depth ageing of some of our wines.

A domain committed to respecting the environment and its consumers

Chateau Laroche makes it a point of honor to respect the environment, its soils, biodiversity, the men working in the vineyard and the end consumer. The HVE (Haute Valeur Environnementale) certification awarded to all the wines produced on the estate attests to this commitment, and promotes farming practices that are more respectful of the environment. Maintaining grass cover and permanent flowering meadows in the vineyard to encourage biodiversity and local fauna, particularly bees; recovering and treating effluents; and using products only when necessary and biocontrol products (which have less impact on the environment), are just some of the actions implemented at Château Laroche to meet the requirements of this certification.

Two main vintages...

Chateau Laroche offers its wine declined in red and white. A Côtes de Bourg appellation wine, it is vinified from Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Malbec and aged in oak barrels. Appreciated differently depending on the vintage, its red is structured and presents a complex aromatic profile of ripe black and red fruits (blackberry, strawberry), with spicy, woody and toasty notes. The white has a fresh, full, round profile with floral notes (acacia flower), fresh fruit (passion fruit, apricot) and citrus (grapefruit, lemon).
Chateau Monseigneur is a wine produced by Château Laroche but classified in the Blaye Côtes de Bordeaux appellation. It is vinified from Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon grapes and aged in oak barrels. A supple, aromatic red wine with notes of ripe red and black fruit (redcurrant jam, blackberry) and a woody, vanilla background (spicy notes and caramel), with vanilla notes and toasty oak.
The château's wines have good ageing potential. They range from 8 years for Château Laroche, to 20 years for the Cuvée Prestige. Our wines go perfectly with game, red or white meats, or even cheese. They are the perfect accompaniment to high-quality food and wine.

And special cuvées produced only on certain vintages

100% Malbec.

A special cuvée to showcase Bordeaux Malbec, a grape variety that has been more or less forgotten for years but is now making a comeback. Vinified in stainless steel tanks without barrel ageing, the expression of Malbec is pushed to its maximum and is not disturbed by wood. A powerful, fruity wine (blackcurrant, black and red fruits) with notes of pepper and violets.

<100% Cabernet Sauvignon.

A cuvée dedicated to showcasing our flagship Bordeaux grape variety. Vinified in stainless steel tanks without barrel aging, the expression of Cabernet Sauvignon is pushed to its maximum and is not disturbed by wood. A structured, powerful wine with a blend of fruits (black, ripe) and spices (pepper, vanilla) on the nose and palate.

Les Elfes.

Vinified only in quality years, Château Laroche's Les Elfes cuvée is produced only in very limited quantities. Selection of the best terroir, reduced yields, optimal ripeness and 20 months' ageing in new oak barrels give birth to this cuvée. The label, inspired by the Nordic legend of the Icelandic Elves (or hidden people, called huldufólk), highlights a mystical and unique cuvée. A powerful, concentrated wine with silky tannins and aromas of ripe fruit (blackberry, cherry, fig), woody, vanilla, roasted (coffee) and licorice notes.

Cuvée prestige.

A special cuvee, vinified only in certain vintages, Château Laroche prestige is produced in limited quantities only. This wine results from the selection of the best grapes from the best plot, reduced yields, great maturity and ageing for 25 months in new oak barrels. Dense, powerful and elegant with firm tannins, it expresses aromas of ripe red fruits (blackberry, blueberry, cherry), with melted, harmonious toasty oak, vanilla and licorice notes.

Rosé (Les tours de Laroche)

Chateau Laroche also produces a fresh, fruity rosé when the vintage lends itself to it. Its light color reflects its lightness, which on the palate will offer fruity notes (red fruit, banana, English candy) and a slight sweetness.

Clairet.

A true intermediate between reds and rosés, Clairet is a fresh, highly aromatic wine. It is vinified from a blend of Cabernet and Merlot grapes, and benefits from a longer maceration than rosé to obtain a deeper juice that stands out for its color and red fruit aromas. Light, fresh and well-balanced, it is supple, with a real aromatic fullness and soft tannins.
