Appellation Côtes-de-Blaye

The breathtaking view from Côtes-de-Blaye over the Gironde estuary

The vignoble du Blayais overlooks the Gironde estuary and offers a unique view. You can admire the hilly landscape on one side and on the other side, the edges of the estuary pointing to the nearby ocean.

The terroir des Côtes-de-Blaye is rich and diverse. It covers 6,000 hectares and benefits from a mild oceanic climate ideal for growing vines. The plots of land are mainly located on the hillsides, hence the use of the term Côtes-de-Blaye.

On the side of the town of Blaye, in the west of the Côtes-de-Blaye territory, the merlot grape variety dominates and develops its immense aromatic potential on clay-limestone soils. On the south-eastern side, the soils are more diverse and several grape varieties are grown. The land to the north of the appellation is reserved for the Sauvignon Blanc grape and its subtle aromas.

The white wines of Côtes-de-Blaye

The Côtes-de-Blaye white wines are mostly made from sauvignon blanc. This grape variety is very marked by aromas of citrus, but also exotic fruits which bring a great freshness. The winemakers also use the semillon and muscadelle grapes which bring roundness to the Côtes-de-Blaye white.

The white wine displays a beautiful light yellow coat, crossed by the green reflections. Its nose exhales fruity notes where citrus fruits are mainly recognized. Lemon, grapefruit and mandarin dominate. The nose also offers scents of roasted almond. There are also floral notes, including field flowers and white flowers.

The palate is powerful and long. It is lively and, in keeping with the nose, always very fresh. The Côtes-de-Blaye white wine goes well with seafood, especially seafood risotto. It goes well with all fish, with a preference for salmon. You can also offer it with creamy chicken.

The red wines of Côtes-de-Blaye

The red wines of Côtes-de-Blaye are mainly produced with merlot which gives it a deep colour and exceptional fruity notes. The grape variety can sometimes be combined with cabernet blanc, malbec or cabernet sauvignon. The wines are round and have a broad aromatic scope. They are prized for their diverse richness of flavour.

The Côtes-de-Blaye red has a beautiful purple colour with black highlights. There is a whole palette of ripe red fruits in its nose. They are enhanced by spicy notes. When aged in barrels, chocolate and vanilla woody flavours emerge, while the evocation of game is never far away.

The red wine offers perfect balance. It is supple and round, with solid tannic support, but not too bulky. Its robust structure makes it a good wine for ageing. The older it gets, the more robust the Côtes-de-Blaye red becomes. Its mouth is fat and elegant. It offers a beautiful vivacity that perfumes the palate with a delicious bouquet that opens up on the finish.

The Côtes-de-Blaye red accompanies worked meats, such as bœuf en daube or pot-au-feu. It also likes to be alongside grilled tuna with peppers. It is perfect for cow cheese, but also goat cheese. It is wonderful with comté or morbier cheese.
