The winemaker

The history of Château la Martinette

The history of Château la Martinette began in 1620, when it was owned by an old Lorguais aristocratic family, the Chieusse de Combaud. The estate was initially a magnanerie, meaning that it made its living from silkworm rearing.

In 1796, Château la Martinette turned to olive growing and forage production.

In 1880, a fire ravaged the château, which had to be completely restored. It was then completely transformed into a winery.

In 1924, the construction of a bridge across the River Argens brought the communes of Lorgues and Le Thoronet closer together. It also brought together the Prieuré Sainte Marie Vieille and Château La Martinette.

In 2018, the estate is restructured and production rethought, resulting in the launch of a new range of wines.

Today, Château la Martinette takes advantage of its generous soil to expand production and focus on other traditional Provencal crops. A conservatory orchard and vegetable garden have been created to preserve biological diversity, as well as an olive grove.

The vegetable garden covers 5,000 m². It offers seasonal fruits and vegetables (eggplant, zucchini, squash, potato, leek, pâtisson, tomato, watermelon, melon), as well as aromatic herbs (parsley, basil, chives, rosemary and thyme).

The orchard covers 5 hectares with over 700 fruit trees, producing 10 varieties of fruit: persimmon, apricot, cherry, almond, fig, peach, quince, pear, apple and over 200 table vines.

The Château la Martinette vineyard

The Château la Martinette vineyard covers 47 hectares, part of the Côtes de Provence appellation. Nestled in the heart of a 350-hectare forested area, the estate is farmed organically. Its orchard, vegetable garden and olive grove contribute to the preservation of biodiversity, thanks to reasoned management.

The vineyards of Château la Martinette feature all the traditional grape varieties of Provence: Grenache, Syrah, Cinsaut, Rolle, Clairette, Mourvèdre, Cabernet-Sauvignon, and Tibouren.

Château la Martinette also produces a seasonal red wine, La Grande Pièce, made from a selection of its best grapes. Intended for cellaring from 5 to 10 years, this wine is made only in the years of the best vintages.

La Grande Pièce has a deep, intense ruby color. Its nose is marked by black fruits, as well as notes of undergrowth and cedar. The palate is greedy and well-balanced, with a liquorice finish.
