Appellation Saint-Péray

The Saint-Péray AOC, land of vines for 20 centuries

The Saint-Péray appellation extends over slopes and terraces on the right bank of the Rhône, in the communes of Saint-Péray and Toulaud, in the Ardèche department.

The presence of vines in the 1st century are approved by writings of the Saint-Chaffre Abbey. Later, the wines became appreciated by the kings of France. In 1826, the winemaker Alexandre Faure created a sparkling wine in the appellation. Since then, the white wines of Saint-Péray are still very popular.

It is the marsanne and roussanne that cover the 98 hectares of the appellation, two grape varieties used in the Vallée du Rhône. The wines of Saint-Péray are produced as a single variety or as a blend. Opposite Valence, the appellation is under the influence of a temperate climate, with lots of wind. Finally, the vines are planted on chalky, clay-limestone or granitic soils.

The wines of Saint-Péray: tasting

The white wines of Saint-Péray have a pale yellow colour, with some green highlights, which becomes rather golden or straw-coloured with time. The nose of the still wines diffuses scents of hawthorn, acacia, dried apricot, quince, lychee, dried fruit continued by honey and mineral touches. On the palate, the dry whites are wines with low acidity, sublimated by a pleasant fatness and a beautiful roundness.

These white wines can be enjoyed with pasta, shellfish or ricotta, fish, tartar or sauce. A tajine of monkfish, for example, would be a very good match.

Sparkling wines have a pale colour, and offer fine and numerous bubbles. In these wines, hawthorn and acacia also dominate, accompanied by notes of white peach, beeswax and citrus. On the palate, they are very delicate and fine, subtle, sometimes vinous.

Saint-Péray effervescents are very pleasant as an aperitif, with petits fours, or aperitif bites, hot or cold. They will also accompany fruit desserts.
