Appellation Côtes-du-Rhône-Villages

The Côtes-du-Rhône Villages AOC, an extensive and diverse appellation.

The appellation covers 95 communes located in the southern part of the Rhône Valley. The most recognised producing villages are Visan, Cairanne, Laudun, Rochegude, Valréas and Chusclan.

The first vine plants were probably brought to the Rhône Valley by the Greeks 600 years before our era. The location was strategic because of the proximity of the Rhône river which offered many commercial outlets.

The different grape varieties allowed are bergeron, carignan, cinsault, counoise, grenache, marsanne, mourvèdre, clairette, roussanne, shiraz, syrah and finally viognier.

96% of the production is concentrated on red wines, which are sometimes significantly different from one another due to the variety of exposures and certain nuances in the soils and climates.

Overall, the climate is Mediterranean, and a violent mistral brings a strong drought. North-facing plots face the mistral, which dries out the grapes and concentrates the juice. A southern exposure, on the other hand, shelters from the wind and leads to earlier harvests.

The soils are also varied. There are quite stony clay-limestone soils, which produce generous and ample wines with powerful aromas. On the stony arid soils, the wines are elegant, finer and fruitier.

How to taste Côtes-du-Rhône Villages appellation wines

The red wines of this appellation have a ruby red coat with garnet highlights. Their nose is powerful, spicy, sometimes vanilla and there are aromas of jammy black fruits. On the palate, these are full-bodied wines with pronounced tannins, and they develop aromas of forest fruits. Their ageing potential is high.

They will go perfectly with game, stuffed vegetables, truffle-based dishes but also salads with giblets, gizzards for example.

The white AOC Côtes-du-Rhône Villages have a light yellow coat. Their nose develops parfumes of white flowers, citrus, and sometimes exotic fruits. Their palate is vivid, fruity and fresh and has a nice acidity.

They go very well with shellfish, creamy poultry or cheeses such as fresh goat cheese.
