Appellation Vin de Pays de l'Ardèche

Vin de Pays de l'Ardèche, an appellation between the Rhône and the Massif Central

The IGP Vin de Pays de l'Ardèche is located between the Rhône Valley to the east and the Massif Central plateaus to the west. The PGI covers 339 communes, totalling more than 7500 hectares. The grape varieties in the appellation are varied, with merlot, cabernet, syrah and grenache in red, followed by chardonnay, sauvignon and viognier in white.

The vines have a wide variety of terroirs, characterised by different climates and soils. Indeed, the PGI is under the influence of a Mediterranean climate, and each region has its own particularity: strong mistral in the Rhone Valley, dry summers on the Gras plateau... On the soil side too, the PGI is rich: limestone, marl, clay, sand, pebbles...These different terroirs therefore do not produce identical wines.

PGI Pays de l'Ardèche wines

Although the wines differ greatly according to terroir, it is possible to identify some common characteristics.

IGP Pays de l'Ardèche Blancs

The white wines of the PGI have a golden or straw colour, quite bright. The nose is very often marked by white flesh fruits such as pear, apricot or peach. There are scents of white flowers, spices and sometimes dried fruit. The palate is fresh, round, often accompanied by mineral notes.

This white wine makes a fine pairing with shellfish, fish, poultry in cream sauce or goat's cheese.

IGP Pays de l'Ardèche Rosés

Pays de l'Ardèche rosés often have a light pink coat with salmon-coloured highlights. The nose diffuses scents of flowers and red fruits. These are quite gourmand, fresh, fruity wines, and spicier if they contain syrah.

Rosés from this PGI go well with cured ham, grilled meats, sautéed vegetables, or fruit salads.

IGP Pays de l'Ardèche Reds

The PGI reds have a garnet colour. The nose is characterised by aromas of red and black fruits. The palate is structured, rather sweet and fruity when the wine is made from merlot and cabernet, rather spicy and full-bodied if syrah and grenache dominate.

These red wines are ideal served with barbecued red meats, lasagna, or even spicy dishes like couscous.
