The history of Domaine de Pellehaut

Pellehaut takes its name from the Roman pila, which designated a building. 2 kilometers away, inscriptions on the site of the Gallo-Roman villa at Séviac attest to the presence of vines in Roman times. Roman times.

Château de Pellehaut has been the stronghold of the Béraut family for four centuries. In the 1950s, Gaston Béraut decided to take over from a tenant farmer. He also took advantage of the opportunity to acquire new land, doubling the surface area of Domaine de Pellehaut to 300 hectares, including 50 hectares of vines.

This expansion made it possible to cultivate plots of immense diversity. Wine distillation for Armagnac is now carried out on the estate. In the early 80s, Domaine de Pellehaut embarked on the adventure of producing Côtes de Gascogne wines. The vineyard was restructured and the winery renovated. Gaston's two sons, Martin and Mathieu, joined the Domaine de Pellehaut management team.

The Domaine de Pellehaut vineyard

Today, Domaine de Pellehaut employs around twenty permanent staff, in addition to seasonal workers. After analyzing the soil and vegetation, the vines are grassed over and compost-based organic fertilization is adapted to the needs of each plot. Chemical treatments are thus reduced to a minimum.

Domaine de Pellehaut is farmed in the Gascony style. This means a mix of vineyards, cattle breeding and cereal crops. Some fifteen grape varieties are grown on the estate, including Chardonnay, Sauvignon, Gros Manseng and Petit Manseng. Domaine de Pellehaut harvests most of its grapes at night, to preserve their quality. Low temperatures help preserve the aromas contained in the grape skins, which are sensitive to the sun's rays.

Where the soil is clay-limestone, red grapes and Chardonnay flourish. Boulbènes (a mixture of clay and sand on a limestone sub-layer) are best suited to local grape varieties for the production of white wines of great aromatic finesse. Light boulbènes (a mixture of clay and sand, with a high proportion of sand) are reserved for Armagnacs.
