    In a few words ...

"A member of the elitist club of "five" châteaux elected premier grands crus classés in 1855, Château Lafite Rothschild undeniably enjoys a unique international prestige and aura. Its aristocratic ancestry is clearly a genetic trait in its favor. The first known reference to Pauillac de lafite dates back to 1234, with the Gascon "la hite" meaning the hillock, where the château would find its origins in the 15th century. Occupying some 50 hectares at the time, vines were not the main production of the seigneury of lafite, and the first plantings were made in 1680 at the request of jacques de ségur des francs. At the end of the seventeenth century, his son alexandre married the heiress of château latour, and 100 years later, the names lafite and latour would appear for the first time in British records. the two châteaux would be managed by the same people until the end of the eighteenth century, when the de ségur family definitively elevated château lafite to royal status, winning the favor of king louis xv and his court. Served at the feasts of maréchal richelieu and madame de pompadour, lafite became "the king?s wine" with those known as "the princes of the vines". After seducing France, the Enlightenment and the fashion for claret wines across the Channel led Château Lafite to conquer the hearts of the English and their crown. After this dispossession, the château was resold several times until 1868, when the estate was sold to baron james de rothschild (cousin of nathaniel, who had bought mouton fifteen years earlier). Then a banker and founder of the Paris branch of the family, he signed contracts with various brokers and merchants right up until the Second World War, before the estate was sold.
