Chianti is the most famous Italian wine in the world. In the 1960s, its wines were low-end, table wines. With the evolution of Tuscan winemaking legislation, Chianti wines have greatly improved in quality and offer excellent value for money. Its grape variety is Sangiovese.
The 1954 vintage suffered heavy rains in the second half of the summer, which displeased the grapes and prevented them from ripening. The red wines were average, healthy but unripe.
