The winemaker

An ancient family history

The Dopff family has been established in Riquewihr since the 17th century and the family estate was founded in the 19th after five generations of coopers. Since then, the property and the know-how have been passed on from generation to generation. The vineyard prospers and evolves with the acquisition of new terroirs, the will to constantly improve practices and this passion for good wine and work well done.

Since 1925, the House of Dopff has been established at "Le Moulin", a locality at the foot of the Schoenenbourg, one of the Grands Crus of Alsace. Julien Dopff is the creator of the Crémant d'Alsace. He had the idea of applying the "méthode Champenoise" to the wines of Alsace and what was so successful with champagne enabled him to create Crémant.

In 1976, Pierre Dopff encouraged the creation of the AOC of the same name. He was also the first to decide to market his wines in fluted bottles. These elegant bottles still distinguish Alsace wines today.

If they knew how to use modern innovations and to be inventive, the Dopffs are above all winegrowers attached to the know-how and traditions, with an ethic and a demanding vision of their profession. Today, the entire estate is run under integrated viticulture and is preparing for conversion to organic farming.

An exceptional wine estate

Located primarily in the town of Riquewihr, the Dopff vineyard enjoys a privileged situation. It is protected from the north winds thanks to its location at the foot of the hills, benefits from a microclimate on the heights, a full southern exposure and exceptionally natural soils.

The Dopff vineyard is also several terroirs in Grand Cru, with 1.3 hectares of clay and marl soils in Grand Cru Sporen and nearly 10 hectares in Grand Cru Schoenenbourg.

Dopff also has 20 hectares specifically for Crémant d'Alsace with 55% Chardonnay, 40% Auxerrois and 10% Pinot Blanc.

The crémants

Alsatian crémants are made either from a single grape variety, often Pinot noir or Chardonnay, or from blends, devised to enhance the flavours. Dopff Crémants come in a complete range with Cuvée Julien, a prestige Crémant named in honour of Julien Dopff, Cuvée Blanc de Noirs made from Pinot Noir, a Rosé 100% Pinot Noir, a Chardonnay and Cuvée Bartholdi, made from a blend of Chardonnay and Pinot Blanc, produced only in the best vintages.

The Dopff Grand Crus

In the Alsace Grand Cru appellation, only four grape varieties are represented: Gewurztraminer, Riesling, Muscat and Pinot Gris. Dopff has three of these Grand Crus and produces Prestige cuvées from these terroirs. One example is the Gewurztraminer GC Brand de Turckheim 2017. It is an elegant and balanced wine that receives awards in every vintage. The 2016 Schoenenbourg Riesling is a fine and elegant Grand Cru with incredible complexity and beautiful citrus notes.

Vendanges Tardives and Sélection de Grains Nobles sweet rieslings come from the Schoenenbourg Grand Cru

The "Vendanges Tardives" label is only given to rich, mellow wines with great aromatic complexity, produced with grapes harvested at over-ripeness. The "Sélection Grains Nobles" are great wines, obtained with grapes affected by so-called noble rot. This is only obtained under very special climatic conditions and therefore only in certain years. Dopff only produces these exceptional wines in the best vintages.
