The winemaker

The winery

The estate's winegrowing activities go back a long way, to at least the 16th century.
Montrose is a family estate, where the history of the Coste family has been written generation after generation for several centuries. Each winemaker passes on traditional know-how and participates in the development of the estate, with a common goal: to create and produce exceptional wines with respect for terroirs and people.
This family history is inscribed on the bottles of Montrose wines. They are adorned with the coat of arms of the three lizards in homage to Joseph Alazard, ancestor of the current owners, who received it in 1701.
The property is located on terroirs with uncommon characteristics. A wide variety of soils can be found, including well-balanced, filtering clay-limestone soils, terroirs typical of the appellation with Villefranchian terraces of rolled pebbles, and volcanic soils.
This beautiful diversity of terroirs, combined with a Mediterranean climate offering sun, wind and sea spray, results in singular, unique wines.

Environmentally-friendly viticulture

The team is constantly seeking to improve its work, with the aim of reducing carbon emissions and striving towards C02 neutrality by offsetting emissions. Obtaining the High Environmental Value certification at the highest level has rewarded the implementation of reasoned and virtuous farming practices.
The estate is thus financing projects with an ecological dimension, such as the installation of a wind farm in 2020 and the creation of small hydroelectric dams in 2019.
The choice was made to preserve biodiversity as much as possible by leaving natural areas around the vineyard free of human intervention. Garrigues and woods are left untouched to preserve flora and fauna. In addition, a vast program of replanting Mediterranean trees on the estate has been underway for several years. More than 3,000 trees of various species have been planted.

The wines

Domaine de Montrose produces a fine range of wines, with emblematic offerings such as cuvée Domaine de Montrose Chardonnay, a balanced and elegant white wine, cuvée Domaine de Montrose Viognier, an atypical cuvée, giving a fine, fresh wine or Domaine Montrose rouge, a gourmet, very fruity wine.
Montrose also offers cuvées from its best terroirs, such as La Ballade Rouge or Prestige Rosé an exceptional wine made from a blend of Rolle, Grenache and Syrah.
Finally, he makes artisanal wines like the cuvée Salamandre, produced in very limited quantities with less than 8,000 bottles per vintage, or 1701, the artisanal cuvée considered one of the world's best rosés by experts. It comes from an atypical blend of Grenache grown on volcanic soils with Roussanne planted in Mediterranean garrigues. In a perpetual quest for quality and balance, this elegant, subtle wine is produced in limited quantities.
