The winemaker

Their philosophy is based on a great terroir and traditional processes. The aim is to produce all the wines as naturally as possible, in order to produce true terroir wines. For vineyard cultivation, they use indigenous yeast for fermentation and nothing is added to the wines other than a little sulfur before bottling. They want to focus on producing aromatic dry white wines fermented with the skin in a very clean and direct style. The Millar Road vineyard has proven its pedigree and is on similar soils, slopes and aspect to Te Mata Coleraine, one of New Zealand's most beloved vineyards. Over 90% of New Zealand vineyards are located on flat land with alluvial gravel soils, so this soil and site produce very distinctive wines in a New Zealand context. The vineyard is a stunning site for viticulture being situated on a north-facing hill with slopes up to 30 degrees. The soils are lime-rich clays with a volcanic influence - they are classified as Matapiro sandy loam on sandstone and carbonaceous sandstone of the Kidnappers group. The Millar Road estate covers 19.4 hectares, of which 8.9 hectares are planted with vines - 8.0 hectares of Sauvignon Blanc (approx. 18,000 plants) and 0.9 hectares of Pinot Gris (approx. 1,800 plants). New vines were planted in 2004 and 2005. Supernatural Wine Co. achieved full organic certification with BioGro New Zealand in March 2015 and began biodynamic farming practices in 2015. Supernatural Wine Co. was founded in 2009 by Millar Road owner Gregory Collinge and winemaker Gabrielle Simmers. Gabrielle now runs Salmanazar, an export collective dedicated to bringing New Zealand's finest organic and biodynamic wines to the world.
