In the north-east of Italy, on the edge of the Alps, the Slovenian border and the Adriatic Sea, lies the Friuli wine region. The Mediterranean climate on one side and Alpine currents on the other have a major influence on viticulture. The isonzo friuli region has had doc status since 1974. As its name suggests, this well-known grape variety originated in Burgundy. It is a natural mutation of pinot noir. In addition to France, Germany and Italy, this grape variety is also appreciated in New Zealand and Austria.
