The winemaker

At the foot of the Serra da Marofa between two rivers Coa and Agueda, which flow into the international river and nearby Douro is located Figueira de Castelo Rodrigo, village of winemaking tradition where high quality wines are produced. It will be around the twelfth century, when the Cistercian monks living in the monastery of Santa Maria de Aguiar use their knowledge to start a production of vineyards and red wine. Today, the Cave Cooperative Figueira de Castelo Rodrigo is supposed heir to this knowledge and art. Founded in 1956 by 154 members, it now has 800. Every year the cooperative Figueira de Castelo Rodrigo receives on average approximately 8.5 million kg of grapes, and therefore produces 6.5 million liters of wine, of which about 55% white and 45% red. The predominant varieties are white varieties: Malvasia Fina and Syria. Regarding red of the production: the Marufo Rufete, Touriga Nacional, Touriga Franca and Tinta Roriz. The number of awards achieved, sometimes at home and abroad, have undoubtedly confirmed the quality of the wines.
