The schloss johannisberg estate is one of the great bastions of German wine culture. It was here, in the heart of the Rheingau region in western Germany, that late harvest wines were invented. The winegrowers initially focused on Riesling. And the potential of the 'schloss johannisberg' parcel, owned by the estate to which it gave its name, was detected early on. In the 19th century, the German writer heinrich heine, known in france as henri heine, decided on a wine from the johannisberg vineyard and sang its praises thus: "if I could move mountains, johannisberg would be the mountain I would want to take with me everywhere". It has to be said that 'berg' means 'mountain' in German. Today, stefan doktor and marcel szopa, together with oenologist and cellar master gerd ritter, motivate their team every year to deliver top performances when it comes to cuvées of riesling, the grape variety to which the estate is exclusively dedicated. These efforts are regularly rewarded with excellent evaluations from the world's leading wine critics.
