The history of Château Cabannieux

Vines arrived in Bordeaux from the south and developed very rapidly in the region, thanks in particular to the clergy. In the Graves region, it's not unusual to see old estates dating back to the Middle Ages. Such is the case of Château Cabannieux, a very old family home. More recently, traces of it have been found in historical archives, which define it as "Première catégorie" in 1874. Then, in 1881, Château Cabannieux was classified as an "exceptional growth". By then, it had already become renowned for the quality of its wines in the 19th and 20th centuries. Tasters were surprised to find a Grave as well-balanced as it was structured in red, and a white wine as fine as it was elegant. Over the decades, successive generations passed on the know-how that made the house so strong. In 1939, Château Cabannieux won yet another award: it was chosen by the Comité Départemental to represent Graves white wines in New York. The city was hosting one of the world's largest wine exhibitions...

The vineyards and wines of Château Cabannieux

Today, Sean Matthys Meynard is in charge of the estate. After working in the pharmaceutical industry, he decided to change his life and become a winemaker. Driven by a passion for tasting, terroir and grape varieties, he trained in the gravel sector at other estates, including some crus classés. These experiences now enable him to take particular care of his vines. The result is that Château Cabannieux is recognized the world over, exporting around 20% of its volume. Countries such as Germany, Belgium, Denmark, Spain... but also more distant nations such as the USA, Canada and New Caledonia. The estate's success is based on meticulous work and a unique terroir. The vines, with an average age of 45 years, are more qualitative than productive. Grape varieties such as Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon thrive on the estate's predominantly gravelly-clay soil. Merlot accounts for 50% of the vineyard, Cabernet Sauvignon for 45% and Cabernet Franc for 5%. Among white grape varieties, Semillon is king, accounting for 80% of the vineyard, while Sauvignon Blanc accounts for just 20%. Around 80,000 bottles of red wine and 36,000 bottles of white wine are sold each year from the estate. Some of them may well end up on your table...
