The Château Smith Haut Lafitte vineyard has grown over the years to cover 80 hectares in a single block. The owners and technical director live at either end of the estate, which benefits from continuous surveillance and weather-proof responsiveness. The estate owes its reputation as the "gravest of the gravels" to the smoky notes that characterize its wines, as well as to its hills (laffite or lafite in Old French) of semi-precious pebbles and cobbles, deposited by the Garonne River millions of years ago. Château smith haut lafitte's bio-precision work philosophy combines innovative winemaking techniques with environmentally-friendly viticulture. In the vineyard, no chemical inputs are used; green harvesting is carried out with meticulous attention to the needs of the plants. Whole berries in small wooden vats at 28°c, extracted by manual punching down.
