In a few words ...

After making wine for the Cave des Vignerons d'Estezargues (Côtes du Rhône) from 1989 to 2001, jean-françois nicq and his childhood friend bijan mohamadi (maths teacher at montpellier university) bought a vineyard in the eastern Pyrenees. They named it "domaine des foulards rouges", in memory of their militant past and as a tribute to fréderic fajardie, author of neo-realist detective novels and the humanist revolutionary saga "les foulards rouges". This is how the estate came into being on January 1, 2002. The choice of organic and natural viticulture was a natural extension of the experience gained at the Estezargues winery. The vines were converted to ab from the 1st year, and vinification is natural, with no inputs if possible (indigenous yeast, no sulfur, no filtration or fining). Bottling is done by hand and by gravity (no pumps). The estate, 9ha in 2002, has grown with a few plantings and a few additional farms. It now covers 15ha and produces 30,000 bottles a year.
