The winemaker

A cooperative winery to adapt to climate change

In 1965, a group of winegrowers from the South-West of France decided to join forces to blend their production. Thus was born the Cave Berticot, 2km from the village of Duras, at a place called Berticot. The main aim of the cooperative is to bring together the region's small producers, pooling their strengths to produce together, and adopting new, responsible methods.

Indeed, the environmental impact involved in wine production is substantial. After 50 years, this winery has become an emblematic brand of the South-West, the first to supply nearly 55% of the production of the Côte Duras appellation.

Today, it is a benchmark and a guarantee of quality thanks to the different methods used by the winegrowers, who are committed to sustainable development and organic viticulture.

On this territory, cooperative winegrowers, technicians, oenologists and sales staff all share the cooperative's values and dynamics.

Richness of the Berticot cooperative winery

The Berticot cooperative winery is made up of over 120 winegrowers and more than 1,000 hectares of vines. The Berticot cooperative's vineyards are carefully selected to produce a variety of quality cuvées to satisfy a wide range of consumers.

The Berticot brand is sold in France and widely exported internationally via supermarket and traditional channels.

A long-term ecological commitment

The cooperative's commitment to a responsible organic approach began at the Berticot winery in 2008. Part of the vineyard was converted to organic farming. In total, this involves 14 farms and 150 hectares of vines. In 2010, this process was marked by the award of Agriconfiance certification.

In addition, the Berticot winegrowers join the Conseil Interprofessionnel des Vins de Bordeaux's Environmental Management System and later write their first report. In 2009, Berticot's first "Bio", the "BB", appears. It is an organic wine in conversion. It was only in 2016 that 16 winegrowers were certified AB for the Côtes de Duras red and white appellations.

This commitment is reflected in the use of inputs that are more respectful of nature and the environment, more optimal management of waste on the farm, and control of natural resources. Finally, all Berticot cooperative organic brands are eco-designed.

For example, the cork of a wine bottle is made from sugar cane, the label is mainly made from recycled fiber, and the bottle is lighter and has a reduced carbon footprint.
