Margaux (first name), a diminutive of marguerite, comes from the ancient Greek margarites, meaning "pearl". Ernest Hemingway named his daughter Margaux as a tribute to the vineyard, which he particularly loved, hoping that she would grow up to be "a woman of her own charm". Château Margaux is without doubt the most illustrious estate in the Bordeaux region. Few crus have so many assets to place them in the firmament of the world?s greatest wines, in terms of both quality and reputation. Its neo-Paladian architectural style, with its massive peristyle pediment, its majestic avenue of plane trees, its secret village lanes and its colossal colonnaded winery, all contribute to the grandeur and majesty that have earned the château the nickname of the Versailles of the Médoc. The 78 hectares of vines that stretch across the highest ridge of Margaux, overlooking the Gironde estuary, have had many prestigious owners. But who shapes the other more? First, the Bordeaux poet ausone, who gave the name marojallia to the future commune of margaux. Then, for three centuries, the powerful d?albret and de lestonnac families who watched over the estate. In the 17th century, the innovative estate manager Berlon introduced cultivation and winemaking methods that paved the way for modern winemaking. Next came the wealthy shipowner Bertrand Douat, Marquis de Colonilla (the historic name of Bayonne), who, with the architect Louis Combes, built the architectural and aristocratic masterpiece of this residence. Finally, Count Pillet-Will? Regent of the Banque de France - who arrived at the end of the 19th century, created the second wine, "Pavillon Rouge".
