The winemaker

In 1636, the arrival of Nicolau Kopke as Consul General of the Hanseatic League marked the beginning of the Kopke brand. Founded in 1638, Kopke is today the oldest Port house, renowned for the quality of its wines and becoming a benchmark in the market. Initially Port merchants, they became landowners in 1781 and began producing their own wines. In 1922, they bought the Quinta de Sao Luiz, renowned for the quality of its soils and vines, and made it the sole production site for Porto Kopke. Port wine is a blend of different grape varieties. All the grapes used to make Port wine must come from the Douro Valley region. These wines are aged in the Douro Valley, or in Vila Nova de Gaia, south of Porto on the banks of the Douro River. After harvesting, it's time for pressing, maceration, fermentation and mutage, which give Port Wine its distinctive organoleptic characteristics. During this crucial stage, fermentation is interrupted by the addition of brandy, so that the wine retains the natural sugar content of the grapes, giving Port its high alcohol content and sweetness.
