Appellation Echézeaux

AOC Echézeaux, of the Grands Crus of Burgundy

The appellation Echezeaux extends over the single commune of Flagey-Echézeaux. It includes various climats, such as Les Beaux Monts Bas, Quartiers de Nuits, Rouges du Bas, En Orveaux, all classified as Grands Crus.

Echezeaux comes from the word chezeau, meaning hamlet, or grouping of houses. The vineyard is indeed located close to the village. It was maintained by the monks of the abbey of Cîteaux from the 11th century, as was the majority of the vineyards of the Côte-de-Nuits. The appellation was then obtained in 1937.

Echézeaux represents 44 hectares planted with pinot noir only. The vines grow up to 300 metres in altitude, with a temperate climate with continental influences. The soils of the appellation are quite diverse, often argilo-calcareous, stony, but sometimes also composed of red silts.

Taste the Grand Cru Echézeaux

This red wine offers a ruby robe, with fairly dark purple highlights. On the nose, we note scents of spices, prune, undergrowth, as well as some animal notes. In the early years, the wines develop scents of rose, violet or cherry. As the years go by, musk, mushroom, fur and leather are more likely to be noted.

On the palate, it is a success of balance, the tannins are supple, one notes a very pleasant roundness. Echezeaux red wines will reach their peak after 4 or 5 years of cellaring.

They can be enjoyed with roast lamb, prime rib, game, autumnal dishes, for example braised pork with root vegetables and chestnuts or mushrooms. With cheeses, you can choose a reblochon, coulommiers or Saint-Nectaire.
