Appellation Montrachet

AOC Montrachet, the story of a Grand Cru

The appellation is located in the communes of Chassagne-Montrachet and Puligny Montrachet, in the Côte-de-Beaune vineyards. The vines have been present in the region for almost a thousand years, and have been able to resist through the centuries thanks in particular to the presence of the monks of the Abbey of Maizières, who tended the vineyards from the 12th century.

The 8 hectares of the appellation are planted solely with Chardonnay, a grape variety that manages to express all its finesse and elegance on the Montrachet terroir, a key element in the making of a Grand Cru.

The vineyard benefits from a southern and south-eastern exposure, the plots are generally located on hillsides, and the climate is oceanic, relatively mild. The soils are either clay or limestone.

Grand Cru Montrachet tasting

The white AOC Montrachet offers a golden colour coat, crossed by emerald green reflections, which will evolve on a more intense golden colour with the years. The nose is very aromatic and complex. Depending on the parcel, one detects rather the vegetal with fern and hawthorn or else butter and hot croissant.

The white wines nevertheless have some common characteristics, one feels notes of dried fruit, bitter almond, lemongrass and honey. The nose can also offer mineral and spicy scents, and orange in rare cases.

On the palate, one immediately notices an extremely refined wine, the acidity is very well balanced, the wine is unctuous although dry, with aromas of honey. The Montrachet definitely deserves a few years of cellaring, 10-15 years, and even 30 years for the greatest vintages.

This exceptional white wine deserves dishes that are up to its standard: foie gras, caviar, lobster, crayfish, and scallops should be chosen to accompany it. It will also magnify poultry with morels or truffles.
