Appellation Viré-Clessé

The Viré-Clessé AOC, the great land of chardonnay

The AOC covers more than 430 hectares spread between the communes of Clessé, Viré and Montbellet. It produces only white wines, and the latter sometimes benefit from the Grand vin de Mâcon" mention.

The Viré-Clessé appellation has replaced the former appellations Mâcon-Clessé and Mâcon-Viré since 2002. It could have been split into two appellations, but this was not the case as the wines of the two communes of Clessé and Viré are very similar.

The vines enjoy a temperate climate, characterised by mild winters and hot summers, which help to give the berries a nice ripeness.

The soils of the appellation are clay, and there are "cray", soils typical of the Mâcon vineyards, composed of limestone and white pebbles.

Vire-Clessée AOC wine tasting

The white wines carrying the appellation have a beautiful golden, rather pale colour, crossed by some green highlights.

The nose is very rich, diffusing numerous perfumes.

Indeed, we find floral scents of hawthorn, honeysuckle, broom, acacia and lemongrass, but also vegetal and fresh scents of mint, verbena, fern or fresh almond. Finally, white peach and quince jam often bring a sweet side to the nose.

On the palate, these white wines are fresh, lively and round. They have good ageing potential, although they are very good young.

The white Viré-Clessé go very well with frog legs, fish in sauce, seafood au gratin, sautéed vegetables but also goat cheese. This white wine will be perfect with a warm goat cheese salad with honey.
