Appellation Santenay

AOC Santenay, the choice of the vine

The Côte-de-Beaune vineyard appellation and its 340 hectares are spread over the communes of Santenay and Rémigny, sometimes at an altitude of almost 500 metres.

Santenay is a former spa town. It benefits from a natural thermal spring which made the town famous among curists. But as the years went by, the thermal activity was abandoned...the vineyard on the contrary is not!

And this can be explained by the ideal conditions for wine production. Indeed, the appellation enjoys a continental climate, marked by hot summers and very good sunshine which allows the grapes to soak up the sun.

The grape varieties of the AOC are pinot noir and chardonnay, planted on chalky soils in the higher elevations, which become rather marly as they descend.

The wines of the Santenay appellation

Santenay red wines concentrate the majority of the production. They are wines for laying down. Their colour is purple, or dark cherry colour, very bright. The nose offers floral scents of rose, violet and peony, as well as scents of red fruits, and spices such as pepper, cinnamon, liquorice. Over the years, it develops notes of candied fruit and stone.

The palate is characterised by a beautiful intensity as well as depth and persistence, with discreet and fine tannins. Santenay red goes wonderfully with meats such as veal, beef or duck, but also with poultry cooked in the Asian style, quite spicy, or home-made burgers. With cheeses, it is best to choose a reblochon, a bleu de Bresse or a Brie.

The white Santenays have a golden coat, quite pale. The nose is floral and vegetal with scents of fougère and mint. One can detect mineral notes, dried fruit with hazelnut and sweet almond, and sometimes even toast. On the palate, this is a very fresh and lively wine, a treat.

This white wine will form a beautiful pairing with creamy poultry, fish couscous, or strong grilled fish, such as trout or salmon. It will be very harmonious with pasta with mushrooms, or with goat's cheese.
