Appellation Maranges

The Maranges AOC, since 1988

The appellation Maranges was created in 1988. It covers four communes in the Côte de Beaune: Cheilly-lès-Maranges, Dezize-lès-Maranges, and finally Sampigny-lès-Maranges

On the Trois Croix mountain, the vineyards are planted on hills and valleys, the plots are mostly south-facing, at an altitude varying between 200 and 400 metres. The Maranges AOC has 7 climats classified as Premier Cru, including Clos de la Boutière, Clos Roussots and Clos des Rois.

The vineyard enjoys an oceanic climate, and the southern exposure of the plots allows the grapes to soak up the sun. The soils of the appellation are essentially marl, they are very light soils that bring delicacy to the berries.

The pinot noir and chardonnay find their preferred soil in the appellation area. However, the production of red wine represents more than 90% of the total production, with white wines being produced in very confidential quantities.

Tasting the wines of the Maranges appellation

The red AOC Maranges has a ruby colour coat, with raspberry hues and some purple highlights. The nose is very marked by fruit, especially red fruits, sometimes candied, and there are spicy notes. The palate is fresh, fat, shot through with notes of smoothness and pepper. The acidity is measured and the tannins are warm.

These red wines can be enjoyed with braised red meats or cooked with spices, caramelised ribs, or with soft washed-rind cheeses such as Rollot or Pont l'Evêque.

The white Maranges offer a golden coat, relatively clear. The nose diffuses scents of white flowers such as acacia, hawthorn and honeysuckle. There are mineral notes with gunflint, and the honey may come to the fore with age. On the palate, these white wines are quite vibrant, with very delicate acidity.

The white AOC Maranges goes very well with fish rillettes, grilled river fish or cooked in foil. For cheese, it is best served with cantal or gouda.
