Appellation Morey-Saint-Denis

Morey-Saint-Denis AOC, high quality burgundies

The appellation is located in the vineyard of the Côte-de-Nuits, in the sole commune of Morey-Saint-Denis. Located between the great appellations Gevrey-Chambertin and Chambolle-Musigny, it has nothing to envy its neighbours. 20 climats of the AOC are classified as Premiers Crus, including Les Faconnières, Les Sorbès, Monts Luisants and Clos des Ormes, and 5 are classified as Grands Crus, such as Clos-de-la-Roche, Clos-des-Lambrays and Les Bonnes Marnes.

The vineyard located 17 kilometres from Dijon was maintained by the monks of the Abbey of Cîteaux from the 11th century. It survived the phylloxera crisis in the 19th century and the mildew crisis in the 20th century.

Spread over 135 hectares, the Morey-Saint-Denis AOC produces red wines and some white wines representing 10% of the total production. The main grape varieties are pinot noir, chardonnay and pinot blanc. The vines benefit from an oceanic climate, and chalky or clay-limestone soils.

Characteristics of Morey-Saint-Denis wines

The Morey-Saint-Denis red has an intense dressing, carmine colour with purple highlights. The nose diffuses scents of black fruit, red fruit and stone. There are also violets, liquorice and fruits in brandy. With the years, the wine develops scents of leather, moss and game. On the palate, it is a good balance between power and fruit, the tannins are round, the wine is fleshy.

It will sublimate meats with a pronounced taste, like game or duck. With cheeses, one will choose the maroilles or the epoisses.

The rare white wines of the appellation have a light colour. On the nose, there are floral notes, with light spicy and buttery flavours. The palate is firm, very balanced between acidity and fat.

The Morey-Saint-Denis white is best enjoyed with river fish, or pike quenelles.
