Appellation Puligny-Montrachet

The Puligny-Montrachet AOC, dream territory of Chardonnay

Spread around the village of Puligny-Montrachet, the vineyard is located in the Côte d'Or department. Viticulture really developed in the region as early as the 15th century, although certain crises such as the phylloxera crisis endangered the vines.

The vineyard has proved its resilience: it now covers 100 hectares and has within it 17 climats classified as Premier Cru, such as La Garenne, Sous le Puits, Champ Canet or even Les Demoiselles.

Of these 100 hectares, only 5 are planted with pinot noir, a grape variety used in the production of red wine. The Chardonnay, on the other hand, finds in this terroir one of its favourite soils and climates, which allow it to develop all its aromas.

The climate of the AOC is temperate, and the vines are protected from the winds thanks to Mont Rachet. The soils are calcareous mostly, although there are areas of marl or clay.

How to taste the wines of Puligny-Montrachet?

The white wine of the appellation has a golden colour, with some green highlights, which will gain in intensity with time. The nose is very rich and varied, with scents of ripe grapes, hawthorn, lemongrass and green apple, but also more gourmet flavours of almond paste, hazelnut, honey or warm croissant. On the palate, this wine is round, concentrated, very harmonious and it offers a nice length. It is a wine for keeping.

The AOC Puligny-Montrachet blanc is a wonderful accompaniment to poultry in sauce, foie gras, shellfish or grilled fish. It can also be drunk with cheeses such as goat's cheese, coulommiers or morbier.

The red wines bearing the Puligny-Montrachet appellation, although rare, are not lacking in interest. Their colour is ruby, becoming darker with age. The nose offers scents of red and black fruits such as currant, raspberry, blackcurrant and blackberry. There are notes of leather, musk, and animal scents with age. The palate is fruity, offers a nice substance and a very pleasant harmony.

The Puligny-Montrachet red is best enjoyed with veal, pork or roast poultry, and it goes very well with Gruyere or Beaufort cheese.
